What is important to know about Jack and Jill competition?

  • Divisions: We offer three divisions: Newcomer, Intermediate and Advanced. In case we don’t reach the minimum number of couples in each division, we may combine two divisions.  Unsure which division to compete in? We suggest basing your decision on the workshop levels you plan to attend and where you generally feel most comfortable during the festival. For example, if you feel very comfortable attending advanced workshops, you might consider joining the advanced division. Another guideline is to consider your dancing experience: If you have been actively dancing and studying Forró for more than 4 years, we recommend registering for the Advanced division. For the Intermediate divion, we recommend more than 2 years of study, and for the Newcomer division, less than 2 years. Please keep in mind that the number of years dancing Forró serves as a guideline only, and it’s important to consider the actual level of workshops you attend and where you feel comfortable.

  • Individual Registration: Registration is done individually, not as a couple. You will be randomly paired up with your dance partner on the spot.

  • Competition Format: Competitors in the Novice division will perform to two different songs, one xote and one baião. Intermediate dancers will showcase their skills to three different songs: one xote, one baião, and one forró. Advanced participants will dance to three songs: one xote, one roots song, and one universitario song. The songs will be selected randomly, and each dance will last for 2:00 minutes.

  • Judging Criteria: Judges will evaluate participants based on their musicality, technique and performance. Be sure to focus on these areas during your dance.

  • Prizes: We offer prizes for the winners, including tickets for upcoming festivals. Stay tuned for updates on prize details!

  • Registration Fee: There is a participation fee of 5 € to cover the costs of competition organization. This fee must be paid in cash at the event before the Jack and Jill starts.

  • Jack and Jill Class: We highly recommend attending the Jack and Jill class offered on Saturday (included in the festival). This class is open to everyone and will provide valuable insights and tips for participating in the competition.
